India’s Job Crisis: 67% of Unemployed Youth Are Graduates

A new report released by Azim Premji University has revealed that nearly 67% of unemployed youth in India are graduates. The study highlights a growing gap between the number of educated job seekers and the availability of suitable employment opportunities.

According to the report, around 1.1 crore graduates were unemployed in 2023. Between 2004 and 2023, nearly 50 lakh new graduates entered the workforce every year, but the number of jobs created annually increased by only about 28 lakh.

The findings suggest that while the number of graduates is rising rapidly, job creation has not kept pace. The report titled “State of Working India 2026” indicates that the supply of educated workers is growing faster than the availability of employment, raising concerns about the country’s labour market and economic growth.
