IIM Lucknow Starts Four-Year BS in AI and Business Analytics

IIM Lucknow began the 2026–27 academic session for its new four-year Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Business Analytics on Tuesday, a day after admitted students reported for registration, document verification and first-term fee submission.
The residential undergraduate programme marks a notable widening of the institute's academic portfolio. It is designed around mathematics, statistics, programming, artificial intelligence, analytics and management rather than treating AI as a short specialisation attached to a conventional business degree.
The official programme page says admission was open to candidates who had qualified JEE Advanced. The application window ran from June 4 to July 3, followed by merit lists and fee deadlines. Students were asked to report at IIM Lucknow on August 17 before classes started on August 18.
What students will study
The curriculum is organised across eight semesters. IIM Lucknow says each course carries 45 hours of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work where applicable. The published structure begins with foundations in mathematics and statistics and develops programming skills, including Python and object-oriented approaches, before moving into artificial intelligence and business analytics.
That sequence matters. Students entering an AI-labelled degree may expect immediate work with sophisticated models, but durable learning depends on probability, linear algebra, data handling and careful programming. Business applications also require an understanding of finance, operations, marketing, strategy and organisational decisions.
The degree's value will be judged less by the label than by how well these components connect. A technically impressive model can still be unsuitable if the data are poor, the objective is vague or the decision creates unfair consequences. Conversely, management students cannot evaluate AI systems responsibly without enough technical depth to question their limits.
A different route into an IIM
For families, the programme creates an undergraduate entry point into an institution best known for postgraduate management education. It should not be confused with the two-year MBA or with a short executive certificate. Students are committing to a full residential bachelor's degree with its own curriculum and progression requirements.
The use of JEE Advanced qualification as an entry condition places the initial cohort close to the engineering-admissions pool. That may help ensure mathematical readiness, although the programme will need to establish an identity distinct from a BTech in computer science and from a traditional BBA.
Prospective applicants in later years should compare the published syllabus, faculty allocation, internships, research opportunities, fees and degree regulations rather than infer outcomes from the IIM name alone. The institute has said that corporate, government and research partnerships will support live projects, but the quality and continuity of those opportunities will become clearer as the first cohort progresses.
The first cohort sets the benchmark
New programmes carry both freedom and uncertainty. Faculty can design assessments around current problems instead of inheriting an old syllabus, but laboratories, advising, electives and placement pathways must be built while students are already enrolled.
Academic integrity will be an especially important part of an AI degree. Students need explicit rules on using generative tools in code, reports and group work, together with instruction on privacy, bias, security and reproducibility. Learning to audit a result is as important as learning to produce it.
Tuesday's start is therefore more than a calendar entry. It begins the practical test of whether an Indian management institute can deliver an undergraduate programme in which computing and business are taught with equal seriousness. The first cohort's experience will shape how students and employers read this new degree long before the final semester arrives.
