GURUGRAM: Hyundai Motor India reported its highest-ever monthly total sales in September, 77,916 units including exports, a rise of 10.8 per cent over last year. The company also noted that bookings for the Bayon, a new SUV nameplate for India, are open at an initial amount of Rs 11,000. The details are in Hyundai's press releases of 1 October and 23 September.

Where the record came from

Domestic sales were 57,166 units, up 10.9 per cent, and exports were 20,750 units, up 10.4 per cent. The earlier total-sales record was 75,360 units in July, so September beat it by 2,556 units.

Exports explain much of the swing. In August, when total sales were 65,796 units, Hyundai said exports of 11,400 units were affected by logistical constraints linked to the conflict in West Asia. September exports of 20,750 units were far closer to July's 21,150. Domestic sales moved less: 54,210 in July, 54,396 in August and 57,166 in September.

"We are delighted to close September 2026 with our highest-ever total monthly sales of 77,916 units," said Tarun Garg, Managing Director and CEO. He added that the company expects festive-season demand to continue.

Over April to August, the August release said, domestic sales grew 12.6 per cent. July also carried model highlights: the Creta posted 18,088 units that month and the i20 posted 6,738. Hyundai's September release carries no model-wise figures, so it is not possible to say which vehicles lifted the month.

The company introduced a Lounge Edition across the Creta, Alcazar and Creta Electric on 10 September. The release does not say how much that edition contributed to the September numbers.

What Hyundai has said about the Bayon

The Bayon is described as a 4.2 metre long mid-size SUV on the Global K Enhanced Platform, which the company says is engineered for 5-star Indian safety standards. That is a design target and not a crash test result. No Bharat NCAP rating has been announced for the Bayon.

Hyundai lists an in-built generative AI voice assistant, a petrol powertrain with manual and IVT automatic options, and styling elements such as a sculpted bonnet, H-Edge LED daytime running lamps, wrap-around door cladding and bridge-type roof rails.

The Bayon's petrol engine is described only as proven and reliable, and the release does not name it. The cabin and boot dimensions are also not given beyond the 4.2 metre length.

Customers can book on hyundai.co.in or at any Hyundai dealership. The release says the SUV is coming this festive season and that the delivery timeline will be communicated at launch.

What is still not announced

The release gives no price, engine capacity, power figure, mileage claim or launch date. The Rs 11,000 is a booking amount and not part of any announced price. When Hyundai does announce prices, they will be ex-showroom figures, and the on-road cost in Gurugram, Delhi or any other city will be higher after registration, insurance and local charges.

The company has said the SUV will enter its line-up as an all-new nameplate for India, which means there is no earlier Indian model to compare it with on price or equipment.

Until then, anyone paying a booking amount should ask the dealer in writing whether it is refundable and how the booking order will map to delivery order.
