Historic Jagannath Temple in Varanasi Set for Grand Puri-Style Redevelopment

VARANASI, INDIA — In a major boost to Kashi's cultural and architectural landscape, the historic Jagannath Temple in Varanasi is set to undergo a grand redevelopment inspired by the iconic Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. The ambitious initiative aims to construct a expansive temple complex and heritage corridor while meticulously preserving the site's ancient sanctum and original legacy.

According to officials from the temple trust, the project will span nearly one lakh square feet. The redesigned complex will feature the Narasimha Temple with a towering 151-foot-high shikhara (spire) and the Jagannath Temple with a 140-foot-high shikhara, both crafted in the traditional Nagara style of Indian temple architecture.

Inspired Architecture and Ganga Views

A specialized team of engineers, architects, graphic designers, and sculptors from Rajasthan has already completed initial site inspections and measurements to finalize the detailed project masterplan.

A central design highlights a direct visual alignment with the sacred Ganges: devotees taking a holy dip along the riverbank will be able to view the main shikhara of the temple directly from the ghats.

Construction will utilize premium red, pink, and white sandstone sourced from Dholpur, Rajasthan, guided by the supervision of experienced traditional artisans.
