GMDA Rs 8.20 Cr Tender to Reline Sector 39-46 Sewer

GURUGRAM: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority has floated a tender of about Rs 8.20 crore to rehabilitate a 20-year-old brick master sewer that runs with the Sector 39/46 master road, using machine-wound spiral lining instead of digging up Netaji Subhash Chandra Road.

The line is 750 mm and 900 mm in diameter and has been leaking, GMDA engineers say, which is why stretches of the road above it have been dipping. The work will cover about 1.5 km. The contractor gets two years to finish. A three-year defect-liability period is built into the Rs 8.20 crore estimate: if the lining fails in that window, the agency must repair it at its own cost.

Executive Engineer Bhim said the tender has been issued because the sewer is old and worn. The plan is to reline it with MWSL rather than replace the brick barrel by open cut. A winding machine is sent in through existing manholes. PVC or HDPE strip is fed from the road, locked edge to edge, and forms a new pipe inside the old one. Traffic on the master road does not have to be stripped for a trench.

That choice is not cosmetic. The same trenchless method is now on the 1,000 mm master sewer under the IFFCO Chowk service road, where a cave-in this week opened a hole more than 30 feet wide. Sector 39/46 has not failed in that way yet. The tender is meant to get there before the next monsoon soaks the bedding and the carriageway drops.

The master sewer along this road takes flow from the sectors around Subhash Chowk, a junction that went under water in the 24 August rain and left school buses stranded. A leaking brick barrel under the road adds sewage to the storm mix and hollows the soil. Relining will not add capacity. It will stop the leaks and restore the wall of a line that still has to carry today’s load.

GMDA has not named the winning bidder. Until the work starts, the existing manholes and the 1.5 km run stay as they are. Residents on the 39/46 divider have lived with sagging blacktop and wet shoulders after rain. If the contractor meets the two-year clock, the brick sewer gets a plastic skin and the road above it a longer pause before the next dip.

The defect-liability clause is the civic body’s lever after handover. Three years of free repair is only useful if inspections actually happen. For now, the paper on the street is the tender: Rs 8.20 crore, 1.5 km, 750 and 900 mm, MWSL, two years to build, three years to stand behind the lining.
