GATE 2027 registration has reopened with a late fee for a short window ending at 10:29 am on Friday, 16 October. IIT Madras announced the reopening on 14 October, after the previous extended registration period ended on 12 October. The special window began at 10:30 am on Thursday, 15 October.

The official notice says the decision follows requests received by the organising institute. The new deadline is in the morning, so candidates should not mistake it for an end-of-day closing time.

Check the fee for your paper choice

The current application-fee table lists an extended-period charge of Rs 1,500 for one paper and Rs 2,500 for two papers for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates. For all other candidates, including foreign nationals, the amounts are Rs 2,500 and Rs 4,500 respectively. PwD refers here to persons with benchmark disability.

The official two-paper combinations table fixes the permitted secondary paper for each primary code. For a CS primary paper, choices include DA, EC, GE, MA, ME, PH, RA and ST; for EE, they are DA, EC, IN, PH and RA. A candidate cannot assume that any two subjects can be combined. The page also warns that the secondary paper may be assigned to a different examination centre in the same city because of scheduling or infrastructure constraints. If organisers later withdraw an allowed combination, the fee paid towards the second paper is to be refunded.

The application FAQ says candidates choosing two papers must select an allowed combination within a single form. They should not create a second enrolment ID for the extra paper. The portal also distinguishes submitting a form from paying for it: an application marked submitted still has its payment pending.

A status confirming submission and successful payment means the application will proceed to scrutiny. Under scrutiny means verification is in progress, while application accepted means that stage has been completed. An incomplete or defective application requires action on the instructions shown. Rectifying a defect sends it back for scrutiny; it does not immediately establish acceptance.

If an internet or power interruption occurs during payment, the FAQ advises checking the payment status after logging in again. A fresh payment is appropriate only if GATE has not received the earlier one. It says extra payments received for one application are returned to the same bank account, potentially taking about fifteen working days.

Prepare the identity records before applying

The document instructions require Indian nationals to register through DigiLocker and allow an unverified-account route with later scrutiny. The name must match the valid photo identification, which must be produced in original at the examination centre. The page says date of birth is fetched from DigiLocker and cannot be changed during the application process.

Candidates need degree and college details, paper choices and six examination-city options from the same zone. The live-photo step requires a webcam or a phone with at least a 5 MP front camera, used in a well-lit area. A separate photograph and signature must meet the specifications linked on the page. Applicable SC/ST, disability and supporting certificates need clear PDF copies in the prescribed DigiLocker folder and file names.

The eligibility page covers students in the third or higher year of an undergraduate programme, as well as graduates of government-approved programmes in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts and humanities. Applicants should still check the row for their qualification. The table lists third-year or completed status for three-year BSc, BA, BCom and BCA programmes.

For MSc, MA, MCA or equivalent programmes, the listed requirement is first year or higher, or completion. The medical-degree row specifies fifth, sixth, seventh or higher semester, or completion. Applicants with professional-society qualifications must check recognition and equivalence conditions. Being able to sit GATE does not by itself establish eligibility for a particular postgraduate course; the admitting institution applies its own selection rules.

The calendar separately lists application rectification until 21 October. City information is due on 4 January 2027; the admit-card date remains unannounced. February examinations are scheduled across 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February.
