Explosion-Like Sound Triggers Panic at Sarnath railway station, Sulphas Bottle Burst Sparks Security Scare in Varanasi

Varanasi: Panic spread at Sarnath railway station in Varanasi on Wednesday evening after a loud explosion-like sound was heard on the platform. Security personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) immediately rushed to the spot and cleared the area.

During the initial inspection, officials found that a plastic water bottle kept inside a bag had burst with force. On questioning the owner of the bag, the matter took a dramatic turn. The youth admitted that he had mixed Sulphas tablets with water inside the one-liter bottle. The chemical reaction led to gas formation, causing the bottle to explode.

Following the incident, local police from the Varuna Zone, along with the bomb disposal squad, dog squad, and intelligence officials, conducted a detailed search of the station premises to rule out any security threat.

During interrogation, the identified as Raju Kumar, a resident of Patna, Bihar—revealed that he was distressed over personal issues. He had come to Varanasi to appear for an online competitive examination. He told police that he was in a relationship with a girl, but his marriage had been fixed elsewhere. Upset over the situation, he had planned to speak to his girlfriend one last time and then end his life.

According to officials, he purchased Sulphas tablets and mixed them in water at Sarnath station with the intention of consuming the solution. However, before he could act, the chemical reaction produced gas and the bottle burst, alarming passengers nearby.
