Drain-Gate Gaps Added to Sohna Road Flooding, GMDA Finds

GURUGRAM: Gaps between two shutters and a delay in fully closing a diversion gate contributed to Monday's flooding on Sohna Road, according to Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority's post-rain inspection. The finding gives the city something more useful than another argument about an exceptional cloudburst: a specific piece of infrastructure that did not perform as intended and now has a repair order against it.

The gate sits near Vatika Chowk where Leg 3, the Badshahpur drain, meets the newer Leg 4 stormwater channel along Southern Peripheral Road. Leg 4 was built at a cost exceeding Rs 100 crore to take excess flow away from the Badshahpur system and reduce flooding on Sohna Road and adjoining sectors. To send water into that route, the gate on Leg 3 has to close effectively.

Two shutters left a gap in the diversion

The installation uses two separate shutters. GMDA's inspection found gaps between them even after the gate was shut. Officials also said closure was delayed during the rain. That combination allowed more water to continue through the already-loaded Badshahpur drain instead of being diverted into Leg 4, contributing to overflow and inundation along Sohna Road.

The scale of the network explains why a small mechanical gap can have a large street-level effect. GMDA puts the Badshahpur drain's capacity at about 3,800 cusecs and Leg 4's at roughly 1,800 cusecs. The catchment includes water from DLF Phase 1 and sectors 42, 43, 52A and 53 to 67, along with villages including Maidawas, Ramgarh, Ullawas, Badshahpur and Ghata. When around 80 millimetres of rain fell on Monday, the diversion system needed to work at the moment demand was highest.

GMDA has directed that the shutters be repaired and made functional. That should include more than closing the visible gap. The operating mechanism, seals, corrosion, power or manual controls and the chain of command for closure during a weather alert all need testing. A gate that works during a dry inspection but is closed late in a storm is still an operational failure.

Other bottlenecks were found across the corridor

The same inspection identified separate causes at other flooded points. Near Medanta, a stormwater drain crossing the Tau Devi Lal drain was not connected to nearby surface-water channels. At Subhash Chowk, garbage blocked drainage chambers, preventing road runoff from entering the network. Officials also noted that a 90-degree turn introduced in the master drain for underpass construction slows the movement of water and can contribute to overflow.

These findings weaken the idea that one grand project can solve Gurugram's waterlogging. A Rs 100-crore diversion channel can be undermined by an unsealed gate, an unconnected inlet or a chamber packed with waste. Maintenance has to be mapped as a system: catchment, street inlet, secondary drain, master drain, gate and final outfall.

Before the next heavy spell, GMDA should publish a test record for the Vatika Chowk gate with the closure time, responsible officer and confirmation that the two shutters seal properly. Residents do not need another promise that the drain has capacity on paper. They need evidence that the water will actually be sent into it when the rain arrives.
