Devotees From Four Countries to Join Six-Day Janmashtami Events in Kashi

VARANASI: Kashi is beginning a six-day cycle of Janmashtami celebrations expected to draw devotees from more than 10 Indian states and four countries, with programmes spread across Gopal Mandir, the ISKCON temple and Maheshwari Bhavan.

Organisers expect visitors from the United States, England, Australia and Switzerland alongside domestic groups. Festivities at Shashthpeeth Gopal Mandir begin on Wednesday, while programmes at ISKCON and Maheshwari Bhavan are scheduled to start on September 3. Homes and smaller temples across the city and rural district are also preparing for the birth celebration of Laddu Gopal.

The Gopal Mandir programme includes a recitation by 21 women and an offering of 108 dishes. Other scheduled rituals across the venues include panchamrit abhishek, maha-mantra sankirtan, maha-aarti and Nandotsav. A procession is set to open the three-day programme organised by the Hare Krishna Hare Rama Sankirtan Society, taking the celebration into the streets before the temple ceremonies begin.

Large religious gatherings in Varanasi are shaped as much by the city's physical limits as by the ritual calendar. Narrow approaches, rain, waterlogging and the current high river level can change access at short notice. Visitors should use designated parking, avoid stopping vehicles at temple gates and follow police or volunteer directions even if a familiar route appears open.

International and out-of-state devotees should keep identification and accommodation details secure rather than carrying every document into a crowded hall. Shoes, bags and phones are easily misplaced during peak darshan, while older visitors may need a quieter waiting area. Families should agree on a meeting point before entering rather than rely on mobile signals inside a dense crowd.

Organisers face a significant operational task: queue management, drinking water, food hygiene, electrical safety around decorative lighting and a plan for rain. The traditional midnight peak can also stretch public transport late into the night. Clear announcements in Hindi and English would help visitors unfamiliar with the sequence of events.

The appeal of this year's programme lies in the contrast that Kashi often holds comfortably. It is a Shaiva city preparing a major Vaishnava celebration, with neighbourhood temples and global devotees sharing the same calendar. The event is not one single gathering but a chain of worship, music, processions and community meals across several days.

For residents, that means both festivity and congestion. For visitors, it offers an unusually broad view of Janmashtami as Kashi practices it—not only the midnight moment, but the preparation before it and the Nandotsav that follows.
