Residents of New Delhi experienced a sudden and dramatic change in weather as strong winds, clouds, and rainfall caused temperatures to drop sharply within a short period. According to weather observations, the temperature in the capital fell by nearly 10°C within just one hour, surprising both residents and meteorologists.

Experts from the India Meteorological Department say that the unusual weather pattern is linked to a rare Western Disturbance, which has affected large parts of northern India. The disturbance has an extended trough line, allowing cold air and moisture to spread quickly across the region, leading to sudden storms and rainfall.

Meteorologists noted that such rapid weather changes are not common during this time of year. They also pointed out that pre-monsoon activities have started earlier than usual, likely due to unusually high temperatures recorded during the first ten days of March.

Rainfall has also increased in the capital. At the Safdarjung Observatory, about 9.4 mm of rain was recorded by March 19, close to the normal monthly average of 12.6 mm. The last time March rainfall exceeded this level significantly was in 2023, when the total reached 50.4 mm.

Considering the ongoing weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for several areas of Delhi NCR, warning of gusty winds reaching up to 50 km/h along with light rain and thunderstorms.

Authorities have advised residents to stay cautious as sudden weather changes and strong winds may affect travel and outdoor activities.
