CBI Detains Senior Railway Official in Varanasi Over ₹1.70 Lakh Bribery Case

VARANASI, INDIA — The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained Nitesh Agrawal, the Senior Divisional Materials Manager (Senior DMM) of the Varanasi Railway Division, in connection with an alleged ₹1.70 lakh bribery case involving a railway tender.

The action was initiated following a complaint from a furniture supplier who alleged that the officer demanded and accepted the bribe to facilitate and clear payments related to a supply tender.

Raids at DRM Office and Official Residence

Following the trap operation, CBI teams carried out simultaneous searches at Agrawal's office located within the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) complex as well as his official residence in Varanasi.

During the multi-hour operation, investigators questioned office personnel and family members. Search teams seized crucial physical and digital evidence, including:

• Digital Devices: The official's personal mobile phone and laptop.

• Documentary Evidence: Key procurement files and tender records.

• Cash & Financials: Unaccounted cash recovered from the premises.

Background and Departmental Oversight

Nitesh Agrawal had been serving as the Senior DMM in the Varanasi Rail Division for the past three years. The Materials Management department plays a pivotal role in railway operations, overseeing:

• Procurement of railway operational equipment and spare parts

• Supply and distribution of staff uniforms and safety gear

• Inventory management and logistics across the division
