Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has opened online applications for admission to its Ph.D. programmes for the 2026-27 session. Registration runs from 6 to 21 October 2026, and the first batch of research scholars is to report to their departments on 16 December.

The dates come from a notice issued on 6 October by the Deputy Registrar (Academic). It covers 16 faculties, each with its own advertisement number, and applies one common schedule to all of them.

The schedule

Online registration is open from 6 to 21 October. A correction window follows on 22 and 23 October, so a candidate who made a slip in the form gets a short chance to fix it.

Call letters will be issued from 29 to 31 October. Physical verification of documents and interviews are set for 12 to 19 November. Results, offer letters and the link for paying the fee will be published from 25 November to 15 December. All admitted candidates must report on 16 December to the head, coordinator or director of the department, centre or school concerned.

Applicants should note the gap. There are about three weeks between the correction window and the interviews, and the notice says applicants must keep visiting the admission website and their own admission portal for updates.

Faculties covered

The notice lists advertisement numbers from 01 to 16 under the heading CoE, for the following faculties and schools: Agricultural Sciences, Arts, Ayurveda, Commerce, Dental Sciences, Education, Environment and Sustainable Development, Law, Management Studies, Medicine, Performing Arts, Sanskrit Vidya Dharm Vigyan, Science, Social Science, Veterinary and Animal Sciences, and Visual Arts.

A candidate must apply against the advertisement of the faculty in which they want to do research. The notice does not say how many seats each faculty has.

Reading the calendar

The registration window is 16 days long. The interview period is eight days long, from 12 to 19 November, and the notice gives no faculty-wise or department-wise break-up inside it. A candidate should therefore keep the whole period free from the day the call letter arrives.

Document verification is physical, as the notice itself says, so a candidate must be present at the university. Result, offer letter and the fee link are spread over 25 November to 15 December, which suggests that results will be put out faculty by faculty, though the notice does not say so.

What the notice does not say

This notice is a schedule. It does not state eligibility, the application fee, seat numbers, reservation details or the way merit will be worked out. The notice says all of these are in the Ph.D. Admission Information Bulletin 2026, which is linked from it. Applicants should read that bulletin before paying anything.

Applications go through the link given in the notice, and the university's admission portal is at bhuonline.in. BHU has not announced a separate exam in the notice, but the bulletin is the place to confirm whether any test or interview weightage applies to a particular faculty.

Why it matters in Varanasi and beyond

BHU is the biggest university in Varanasi, and its research seats draw scholars from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and far beyond. A fixed calendar helps those who are finishing a master's degree or who are waiting for a fellowship result, since the interview dates are known well before the end of the year.

Candidates who are still deciding between research routes may want to see our dates for the CSIR NET December 2026 exam, whose application window runs until 5 November.

A short checklist for this week: download the bulletin, find the advertisement number for the faculty you want, scan your degree certificates and marksheets, and make sure the mobile number and email you register with are the ones you check daily. Call letters and offers are expected through the portal.

Students weighing other postgraduate routes can also read our explainer on UGC's rules for one-year PG through distance or online mode.

The university's own admission pages will carry any change, including a revised date. Candidates should check them before 21 October rather than rely on messages passed around in groups.
