BHU Birla-A Hostel Students Sit In Over Termites, Facilities and Eviction Threats

Students of Birla A hostel at Banaras Hindu University staged a sit-in on the campus road on Friday evening. They placed books, bags and clothes on the thoroughfare and blocked traffic, pressing for better living conditions and the resignation of the hostel warden.

The protest began around 17:00 IST on 21 August 2026. Students displayed more than 50 photographs documenting what they described as long-standing problems inside the hostel and demanded that the warden step down. By sitting with packed belongings visible on the carriageway, the Birla A contingent made the dispute hard to ignore. The blockage was timed for late afternoon, when campus movement is typically dense.The students said they had been complaining for about a year about facilities at Birla A. Among the grievances they raised publicly was alleged termite damage to books and study notes. Some students also said they had already been removed from the hostel. Protesters further showed a video in which, they alleged, a student who approached the warden was shoved. They submitted a memorandum to university security alleging that students who complained faced eviction threats. The shove and eviction-threat accounts are likewise student allegations. The university administration's full response beyond the warden's on-spot remarks was not detailed on Friday.

Warden Satyaprakash Singh, also referred to as Satyaprakash, reached the protest site. He told reporters that complaints had already been forwarded to the administration and that a solution would take time. The students' demand for his resignation was a protest demand on Friday evening, not a decision announced by the university.

University security received the students' memorandum alleging eviction threats for those who spoke up. How the security wing or higher hostel authorities will process that memorandum was not spelled out on Friday. The warden's statement that complaints were with the administration and that remedies would require time remains the clearest official-facing remark on record from the scene.

Whether the students can continue living and studying in the hostel is the practical question behind the luggage display. Termite damage to academic materials, if verified by the administration, would affect examination and research readiness. Until an official inspection note is published, however, it stands as a student claim.
