Bandhwari Leachate Takes New Route Towards Mangar After Heavy Rain

GURUGRAM: Leachate from the Bandhwari landfill has found a downhill route towards Mangar after sustained rain, renewing concern that contaminated liquid could move beyond the waste site and threaten soil and water sources near an ecologically sensitive Aravalli village. The flow was reported along Johar nullah towards Johar bandh, roughly 600 metres from habitation.
The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram had placed soil along the front of the landfill to contain discharge spilling towards the road. The latest rain appears to have redirected the liquid rather than ended the overflow. Residents and environmental campaigners have asked the pollution-control board to inspect the route and collect water and soil samples.
Containment must follow the slope
Landfill leachate is created when water passes through mixed waste and carries dissolved or suspended contaminants. During intense rain, containment systems face both a larger volume of clean runoff and additional leachate. A soil bund on one side can shift the path if the site's drainage map does not account for the full slope and low points.
Municipal officials said the reported flow had been diverted towards ponds within the landfill and linked the incident to excessive rainfall. That is an immediate response, not a final assessment of contamination. Sampling upstream, along the nullah and near the bandh is needed to establish what travelled towards Mangar and whether local borewells require precautionary monitoring.
Earlier filing acknowledged forest-side runoff
The corporation previously acknowledged in an environmental-court filing that rainwater from the rear of Bandhwari can drain into low-lying forest land during prolonged rainfall. Its plan included processing legacy waste near the forest side, creating a buffer of one to two acres and excavating larger drains within the landfill boundary to channel runoff and leachate to internal ponds.
The filing also envisaged lifting collected leachate through tankers. The present episode makes implementation measurable: how much buffer has been cleared, which drains are complete, what storage remains available during a storm and how quickly tankers remove accumulated liquid.
Mangar Bani raises the stakes
Mangar village adjoins Mangar Bani, one of the northern Aravallis' most valued forest groves. The concern is not that every dark flow automatically proves groundwater contamination. It is that repeated uncontrolled movement from a legacy-waste mountain creates a plausible pathway that must be tested before pollution reaches wells or natural depressions.
A credible response should publish sampling locations, laboratory parameters and dates, not merely announce that the flow has been diverted. It should also separate stormwater from leachate, provide enough lined storage for extreme rain and maintain a clear emergency route for tankers.
Bandhwari's waste problem has accumulated over years, but monsoon runoff moves in hours. The new route towards Mangar is therefore a warning about unfinished containment rather than an isolated puddle. The next rainfall will test whether the corporation has closed that route or once again shifted contaminated water from one edge of the landfill to another.
