Akhilesh Says Kashi Will Be BJP’s Downfall Priyanka Calls Demolition At Manikarnika A Sin

VARANASI: The ongoing redevelopment project at Varanasi’s iconic Manikarnika Ghat has triggered a massive political storm. The Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress have launched scathing attacks on the BJP government, accusing it of destroying Kashi's spiritual heritage and disrespecting Queen Ahilyabai Holkar.
Opposition’s Fury:
Akhilesh Yadav (SP Chief): Termed the action as "disrespectful" to Queen Ahilyabai Holkar and Sanatan heritage. He warned, "Avinashi (Indestructible) Kashi will become the cause of BJP's destruction."
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (Congress): Called the demolition a "grave sin" (ghor paap), alleging that the government is erasing history for the commercial interests of a few.
Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress President): Questioned PM Modi, asking if the motive was to benefit "business friends" and why ancient statues were thrown into rubble instead of being moved to a museum.
The Controversy: The ₹25 Crore redevelopment project involves dismantling parts of the ghat to rebuild it.
The Spark: A viral video showed debris from a demolished Madhi (structure built by Ahilyabai Holkar in 1791), leading to allegations that ancient statues were damaged.
Holkar Trust: Yashwant Holkar, head of the Maharani Ahilyabai Trust, visited the site and demanded the restoration of the statues, stating that the disrespect was "unforgivable." He noted that two out of four statues of the Queen were found broken.
Administration & Locals React:
DM Satyendra Kumar: Denied allegations of destruction, stating that all statues are safe and will be reinstalled. He blamed "fake AI-generated videos" for the confusion.
Dom Raja Family: Vishwanath Chaudhary of the Dom Raja family supported the project, clarifying that the beautification was requested by his family and that the idols are safe.
