Adampur Murder Case: Police Arrest Suspect After Late-Night Encounter

Varanasi Police said they arrested a man accused in the killing of sari artisan Ravi Chauhan after a late-night encounter in the Adampur police-station area, bringing a rapid turn in a case that had unsettled residents around the locality. According to the police account released on Saturday, the suspect, identified as Mohammad Tajim, was taken into custody roughly three hours after the fatal assault was reported. He suffered a gunshot injury to the leg during the encounter and was sent to hospital for treatment under police watch.

Investigators allege that Chauhan was struck repeatedly on the head with a stone. Two other people were also reported injured in the episode, which occurred close to a police outpost. Officers began searching the surrounding lanes and checking possible escape routes soon after receiving information about the attack. Police said the trail led them to the suspect, who was later taken for the recovery of the alleged weapon used in the crime. It was during that exercise, officials claim, that the encounter took place.

The police version of an encounter is an official claim and will form part of the case record. Details such as the sequence of firing, the weapon allegedly recovered, forensic findings and independent witness accounts will be important as the investigation proceeds.
