BENGALURU: ACKO's AirPass costs Rs 1,499 a year, including taxes, and pays Rs 1,500 in cashback when a domestic flight is delayed by 90 minutes or more, according to the digital insurer's AirPass page. The company calls it a domestic travel pass, sold as an annual subscription, and says outright that it is not a domestic travel insurance policy.
The page lists one plan only. Benefits apply to all domestic flights a customer takes over the next 12 months, and the company adds a welcome gift worth Rs 1,000.
What the pass pays for
There are three triggers. If a flight is delayed by 90 minutes or more, ACKO says Rs 1,500 goes to the customer's bank account. If the airline cancels a flight, the customer gets a flat Rs 3,000 discount on the fare when booking a new ticket on ACKO's platform. If the customer misses the flight, the discount is 50 percent of the fare, capped at Rs 3,000.
The company says the process is automated and needs no paperwork. ACKO tracks the flight and monitors delays and cancellations, so a delay should trigger the cashback without a claim form. Missed flights are different. They are not detected automatically, and the customer has to start the rebooking. The page says that window stays open for 24 hours, but it gives the opening time as one hour before departure in one place and two hours in another, so travellers should check the current terms in the app.
The Gmail condition and the exclusions
To work, the pass needs access to the customer's Gmail. ACKO says it reads flight booking emails to follow a journey and spot disruption in real time. Linking Gmail is mandatory, according to its FAQ.
The exclusions are listed plainly. There is no personal accident cover, no benefit for trip interruption due to hospitalisation or political unrest, nothing for diverted flights or missed connections, and no baggage cover. International flights are out. The pass cannot be cancelled once activated and is non-refundable. ACKO names IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet and Akasa Air among the airlines it works with, "and more".
A buyer downloads the ACKO app, picks the AirPass product under travel, fills in basic details and pays online. Support queries go to airpass@acko.tech.
The company behind it
ACKO's About page sets out a short timeline. The company was founded in 2016, launched car insurance in 2018, moved into corporate health insurance in 2020, and crossed the billion-dollar mark in 2021, becoming a unicorn. It reports Rs 1,000 crore in annual revenue in 2022, entered health and travel insurance in 2023 and began life insurance in 2024. Varun Dua is listed as founder.
Corporate details are set out in the page footer. Acko Technology and Services Limited is the holding company of Acko General Insurance Limited and Acko Life Insurance Limited, and it says it is not registered as an insurance intermediary and does not sell or service insurance products. Insurance products come from the two insurance companies.
Because AirPass is not an insurance policy, its terms read differently from a standard travel cover. A fixed payout for a defined delay is easy to understand, but its value depends on how often a traveller faces a long delay or a cancellation. The pages reviewed do not say how many passes ACKO has sold or how many payouts it has made.
