Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh intensified his attack on the BJP from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, Varanasi, after concluding his “Rojgaar Do, Samajik Nyay Do” padyatra in the city.

Addressing the media after the padyatra, Sanjay Singh alleged that unemployment, rising inflation and social injustice have become the biggest issues facing the country, but raising these concerns is now being treated as a crime. He said that his padyatra aimed to give voice to unemployed youth, marginalized communities and those who feel excluded from the government’s development narrative.

The political temperature in Kashi rose further after an FIR was registered against Sanjay Singh following his remarks questioning the alleged damage to temples during development work at Manikarnika Ghat, one of Hinduism’s holiest cremation grounds. Singh had publicly raised concerns over religious structures being affected in the name of development, triggering sharp reactions from the ruling party.

Calling the FIR an attempt to silence the opposition, Singh said, “If asking questions about employment and religious heritage leads to FIRs, then democracy itself is in danger.” He accused the BJP government of using police action to suppress dissent, especially when opposition leaders raise uncomfortable questions in politically sensitive regions like Varanasi.

Sanjay Singh also linked the controversy to the upcoming panchayat elections, claiming that the BJP is rattled by growing ground-level discontent. According to him, the padyatra received strong public response, indicating that issues of employment and social justice are resonating even in the Prime Minister’s stronghold.

The BJP, however, has rejected the allegations, maintaining that development work in Kashi is being carried out with respect for religious traditions and accusing the opposition of politicizing sensitive issues for electoral gains.
