VARANASI/DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government over the ongoing Manikarnika Ghat controversy, accusing it of hurting Hindu sentiments and using police action to suppress dissent. His remarks came after police initiated action against him for allegedly spreading “AI-generated” fake content related to the ghat renovation.

‘Does the Baba Know AI?’

Responding to the allegations, Sanjay Singh questioned the government’s claim that viral visuals showing damage to idols and temple structures were fabricated using Artificial Intelligence. Referring to a video circulating on social media that features a local priest or resident, Singh asked pointedly:

“The baba in this video—does he know AI? Can you see where the statue of Mata Ahilyabai Holkar is lying? Has the BJP gone crazy?”

He asserted that the video reflected ground reality and not a digitally manipulated narrative, challenging the BJP’s explanation of an “AI conspiracy.”

Attack on BJP Narrative

Escalating his criticism, the AAP MP said that concerns over Manikarnika Ghat were being voiced not just by opposition leaders but also by locals and members of the Holkar family. According to Singh, even the descendants of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar have claimed that the statue was demolished or mishandled during the redevelopment process.

He further alleged:

“Locals themselves are witnessing temples being demolished.”

“Temples were demolished earlier as well in the name of building the Kashi Vishwanath corridor.”

“If the same thing had happened in an opposition-ruled state, the BJP would have instigated unrest across the country.”

Defiant Stance Amid FIRs

Terming the police action as an attempt to intimidate the opposition, Sanjay Singh said FIRs would not deter him or his party from raising issues linked to religious faith and heritage.

“They can file more cases if they want. We will continue to speak wherever Hindu sentiments are being hurt,” he said.

Political Tempers Rise

The Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment has increasingly become a flashpoint in Uttar Pradesh politics, with the BJP maintaining that no heritage has been harmed and that misleading videos are being circulated to create unrest. Opposition parties, however, continue to allege damage to historical and religious symbols, demanding accountability and transparency.

As the controversy deepens, the clash between the government and opposition over faith, heritage, and development shows no signs of easing.
