Rangbhari Ekadashi 2026 in Varanasi: Kashi Vishwanath Palki Yatra & Mata Gaura Gauna Rituals to Begin from February 24

After the celebrations of Mahashivratri, Varanasi is preparing for the next emotional chapter of the traditional Shiv–Vivah festivities. The rituals of Mata Gaura’s Gauna will begin on February 24 at the Mahant residence “Gaura-Sadanika” in Tedhineem, leading up to the grand Palki Yatra of Kashi Vishwanath Temple on Rangbhari Ekadashi, February 27.
According to Mahant Pt. Vachaspati Tiwari, the ceremonies will begin with the traditional oil and turmeric ritual on the evening of February 24. The turmeric to be offered to Mata Gaura will be specially sanctified with invocation mantras of Nau Gauri and Nau Durga at a prominent Durga temple in the city. As per Kashi’s local belief, Gaura is not just worshipped as a goddess but revered as the daughter of the city, and the Gauna ritual is performed with the same affection as in a family wedding.
On February 25, the ceremonial worship of Baba’s traditional palanquin will take place in the afternoon, followed by the Shodashi Shringar of Mata Gaura in the evening. She will be adorned in traditional Banarasi attire, ornaments, flowers, and sandalwood paste for devotees’ darshan.
On February 26, Baba Vishwanath will symbolically arrive at Gaura-Sadanika to receive Mata Gaura, reflecting the cultural sentiment of a groom coming to take his bride home. The idol of Baba will be dressed in royal attire along with a specially crafted “Dev Kirit,” showcasing the city’s rich artisanal heritage.
The main celebration will take place on February 27, Rangbhari Ekadashi. After special morning rituals, the grand Palki Yatra will commence at 5:00 PM from the temple. Devotees will welcome Baba and Gaura with gulal and flower petals as the procession moves through traditional lanes before reaching the temple again for the concluding rituals.
Rangbhari Ekadashi marks the occasion when Baba Vishwanath brings Mata Gaura to his abode after marriage. For Varanasi, it is not just a religious event but a vibrant cultural festival that fills the city with devotion, color, and collective joy.
