Prayagraj: The controversy surrounding the administrative notice served to spiritual leader Swami Avimukteshwaranand during the ongoing Magh Mela has taken a new turn, with Jagatguru Rambhadracharya issuing a strong statement in support of the Uttar Pradesh government and local police authorities.

Addressing the media, Rambhadracharya dismissed claims of administrative excess, stating that no injustice had been committed against Swami Avimukteshwaranand. “He was not subjected to injustice; rather, he has done injustice,” Rambhadracharya remarked, countering allegations that the administration had overstepped its authority.

Clarifying long-standing traditions and regulations associated with the Magh Mela and the Sangam area, Rambhadracharya explained that access to the Ganga ghats is governed by specific customary and administrative norms. “One cannot travel to the Ganga ghat using a chariot,” he stated, emphasizing that even senior spiritual leaders traditionally walk to the Sangam during the holy congregation.

He further defended the police action that stopped the Swami’s vehicle, asserting that the steps taken were in accordance with established rules meant to maintain order and safety during the massive religious gathering. Rambhadracharya also termed the administrative notice issued by the Uttar Pradesh government as “absolutely right.”

The statement has added fuel to an already intensifying debate within religious and political circles. Supporters of Swami Avimukteshwaranand have criticized the administration’s move, calling it an infringement on religious freedom, while others argue that maintaining discipline and uniformity during the Magh Mela is essential given the scale of the event.

Officials from the Uttar Pradesh administration have reiterated that all actions taken were lawful and necessary to ensure smooth conduct of the Magh Mela, which draws millions of devotees from across the country.

As reactions continue to pour in, the incident highlights the delicate balance between religious tradition and administrative regulation at one of India’s largest spiritual gatherings. The unfolding developments are expected to shape broader discussions on governance, faith, and public order in Uttar Pradesh in the days ahead.
