Faith Beyond Boundaries: Devotees From All Communities Gather at Mata Mai Temple in Varanasi

Varanasi: In the narrow lanes of Ambiya Mandi in Varanasi, a unique temple stands as a symbol of faith and unity. The Mata Mai Temple attracts devotees from different communities who come together to seek blessings and receive prasad, making it a rare spiritual space where belief transcends religious boundaries.
Mata Mai is regarded in Indian folk tradition as the goddess of diseases, believed to protect devotees from various illnesses. She is widely considered a form of Shitala Mata, the deity traditionally worshipped for protection against contagious diseases such as smallpox, measles, fever, and other infections.
According to local beliefs, Mata Mai safeguards people from ailments like Smallpox, Measles, and other seasonal diseases. In some traditions, she is also associated with the Chausath Yogini, where she is believed to represent one of the powerful forms of divine feminine energy.
What makes this temple truly special is its inclusive nature. Locals say it may be the only temple in Kashi where people from other communities also visit regularly with deep faith. Every day, nearly 200 devotees arrive for a ritual known as “Jhadwana,” a traditional healing practice performed at the temple. Long queues can often be seen outside as people wait patiently for their turn, hoping to be relieved from illness and negativity.
