Ajay Rai Slams New UGC Rules

leader Ajay Rai has raised serious concerns over the newly implemented UGC rules, calling them anti-student and harmful to the future of higher education. Reacting to the changes, Rai said that instead of strengthening universities, the new regulations centralise power and reduce the autonomy of educational institutions. He alleged that the government is trying to control universities through policies that ignore ground realities faced by students, teachers, and researchers.
Ajay Rai emphasized that frequent changes in UGC norms regarding appointments, examinations, admissions, and academic structure are creating confusion across campuses. According to him, students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds will be the worst affected, as the rules may increase inequality in access to quality education. He also questioned whether stakeholders like teachers’ associations and student bodies were consulted before framing these regulations.
The Congress leader demanded that the government immediately review the UGC rules and hold wide consultations to protect academic freedom. He stated that education should be a platform for innovation, debate, and inclusive growth—not political control. Rai further warned that if the government fails to amend these rules, opposition parties will continue to raise the issue on the streets and in Parliament.
“Education is the backbone of the nation. Any decision taken without listening to students and teachers will damage the country’s future,” Ajay Rai said.
